Focus and Scope
Philologia is an undergraduate research journal housed in and operated by the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech.
The publication features creative pieces and research conducted by students who have academic majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Philologia is devoted to publishing quality and scholarly research articles from the diverse group of disciplines that span the College. Published articles include an array of subjects, such as literature, linguistics, international relations, political policy, sociology, music, and modern culture amongst other areas in the liberal arts and human sciences field.
The editorial team aims to celebrate the value and scope of the liberal arts education, and showcase the importance of undergraduate research in the field. The importance of publication cannot be underestimated - Philologia hopes to inspire and create a platform for students to showcase their work. The success of the journal speaks to the versatility and importance of research in the fields of liberal arts and human sciences.
At Philologia, the editorial team hopes that authors and readers enjoy the diversity and quality of content, and grow in appreciation for undergraduate research in the fields of liberal arts and human sciences. Philologia encourages the pursuit of undergraduate research while making it accessible and engaging to the larger Virginia Tech community.
Each spring, the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences celebrates the launch of the new volume through an unveiling event. Authors selected for publication will have their work featured, and will also have the opportunity to present. Expect to find thought-provoking, powerful, and topical research within the pages of the newest volume!
Philologia provides a comprehensive forum for discourse on academic inquiries that impact society. Through the publication process, stakeholders of the journal engage fellow students and other readers with the diversity of ideas through scholarly exchange.
The journal is published once a year in April. Our submission period typically takes place between August and the end of December each year. Submitters are notified by February of the status of their piece.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.
The journal’s publisher focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.
Philologia, since its inaugural issue in 2009, has been a premier publication for undergraduate research conducted in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The editorial board, evolving with each graduating year, is composed of Virginia Tech students from a wide range of disciplines and areas of expertise. Annually published and peer reviewed, Philologia exists as a platform for student scholarly endeavors in the exploration of their own academic disciplines, reflecting the dynamism of Virginia Tech.
